Well, the project has come to an end.... A few minor details left to complete but here it is. Sense yesterday I have sprayed on a coat of lightly tinted shellac and 3 coats of polyurethane, of coarse sanding between each step so that the final finish is relatively smooth. I am very happy with how this cabinet turned out and during this process learned a great deal about things I can do better and things I can do differently on the next project. Most of all I learned that my router skills need some work, but luckily finishing with a dark coat like this one can cover up most, if not all, the blemishes from the under trained router skills.

Mobile Island Cabinet: Day 7
Day Seven:
Finally the blog is up to date now. This is the day that I have been waiting for. Step one of the finishing is complete. Oh yes and TA DA! the doors are also complete and assembled. You can see them laying there beside the cabinet. The stain is on the wood and I will spray on the shellac tomorrow. The "SURPRISE" is still being kept a secret. Also, the grey glare, is just that GLARE, the color is actually brown mahogany and I will be adding tinted shellac tomorrow which will make is slightly darker and more brown. To match the table that is currently in my mother's kitchen.

Mobile Island Cabinet: Day 6
Sorry for all the pictures. It seems that the wife wanted pictures of me doing the work rather then just showing what I did. From top to bottom I am filling the holes made by the Kreg Pocket Hole system with pine pocket hole plugs and sanding them smooth. Then, you see a color pallet granted the camera did not do the last color justice it was a brilliant brown mahogany NOT a grey that it is showing. Then, you see the new iron that I purchased once the one that I had access to decided to break on me, I also show how to use it to properly apply veneer edge banding. GRANTED this is just what I have learned from other wood workers not necessarily the "recommended" way of applying the veneer. [January 14, 2012]

Mobile Island Cabinet: Day 5
Day Five:
No pictures today though I will add them tomorrow. Wheels added and sanding done to the cabinet. Purchased the last lumber I will need to complete this project. Weather slowed progress today. [January 12, 2012]

Mobile Island Cabinet: Day 4
Day Four:
Hinges and clamp style latches installed and adjusted. The biggest problem I had was with the hinges wanting to swing to the inside when the flaps are being closed. Once they have been adjusted correctly and put into place they work great. Now to the part in which I will have the most fun and challenge. THE DOORS!! I won't be able to work any more until I am able to borrow my mother-in-law's pickup again to take back and purchase more lumber. [January 5th, 2012]
Mobile Island Cabinet: Day 3
Day Three:
Not a lot getting done today. I added hinges to the flaps and finished the pocket holes for the cabinet interior using my Kreg Pocket Hole System. The hinges you can see are split so the adjustment of them was troublesome to say the least. The split was put there for later use with the braces that will hold the flaps in place once they are brought up for use. [January 4th, 2012]
Mobile Island Cabinet: Day 2
Day Two:
I have assembled the cabinet. Learning that I should not be left to let my mind wander during this because as you can see with the tape I have decided to add two hidden flaps that can be used as a serving area if more space is needed. Later on I find out that my mother wanted that to be added anyway so the surprise trick that I was adding was a good thing (thumbs up). [January 3rd, 2012]
